The Distractions then & now - the Quietus

Mick Middles has written an utterly superb piece on the Black Velvet and Come Home EPs for the Quietus website.  The reviews are complemented by the most thorough examination of the history of The Distractions in decades.  These are just some of the highlights.

Then:

A touch of soul in the black night of punk.

A glimmer of light in the Factory dawn.

Mike Finney... blessed with a voice of dark honey.

An album's worth of nuggets - pure classic gold that had yet to be discovered.

A song as a tangible heart of a city and, frankly, quite unprecedented.

Charles Shaar Murray: "the Distractions are good for dreams."

Paul Morley: "...the perfect pop band for the 80s."

Now:

Perrin's guitar as precocious as ever, his gorgeous swelling melodies.

'Black Velvet' is simple lost love... from a place of heightened perception.

'If You Were Mine', arguably Finney's greatest soulful moment.

Does Mike Finney own the great lost voice of modern music?

'Lost' is a pure pop gem, written by Perrin.

The audience that yearns for the touch, the warmth and for the soul in the darkness of punk.

The great lost band of Manchester are back.
