In session

Here's details of a couple of tantalising sessions that took place more than 30 years ago, thanks to City Fun and the Manchester District Music Archive.  The Distractions on Mike Shaft's show on Piccadilly Radio, and The Distractions on film via Tony Wilson.  Anyone remember these?

The DISTACTIONS... Two tracks for the 12" E.P. "You're Not Going Out Dressed Like That", on T.J.M. Records, are to be issued by the same label as a 7" single, in a new picture sleeve. The reason for the reduction from 4 to 2 tracks is to ensure more airplay, "overcome D.J. resistance".

The band recently did a five-track session for Piccadilly Radio's Mike Shaft, all the tracks being pre-recorded under their own House Producer at Arrow Studios.

Having signed to Arrow for further studio work, the band are currently putting down more tracks, under the direction of the Arrow Studio team, which the company are "completely confident" of licensing out to a major label (several of which are showing interest), in the near future. Granada T.V. have also made a live film of the band, showing of which has been delayed (blame the elections).  However, Tony (one-suit) Wilson assures us it will be going out as soon as they get their heads together.

Rumour here has it that young Wilson is to get his own show called "The Old Grey Whistle and Flute Test".  if he really has only got the one, I'll be pleased to lend him my extremely tasteful jacket.

A Manchester first

More history from the archives. These clippings, from City Fun and the Manchester District Music Archive of course, detail The Distractions' movement between labels, to and from Factory Records, in their short but sweet first incarnation. Of course, FAC12 didn't quite end up as described below.

Incidentally, we are very close to bringing you some good news of the newest label, Hidden Masters, and the forthcoming and ever-so-slightly delayed 'Parabolically Yours' set...

DISTRACTIONS

THE DISTRACTIONS having "severed all connections with the T.J.M. label" HAVE A NEW SINGLE FOR IMMINENT RELEASE ON TONY WILSON'S FACTORY RECORDS. Production is again by the same team at ARROW STUDIOS, headed by BRANDON LEON, who is now the band's manager. Tracks concerned are two of the most well-known numbers of the set, "PILLOW FIGHT", and the legendary "VALERIE".

DISTRACTIONS

THE DISTRACTIONS have signed to Island Records. The contract is for 3 singles in the next six months with Island then having an option for a further six months and an album. As the contract was signed before The Distractions' first London appearance they become the first Manchester band to have signed to a 'major' record company without having played in London.

THE DISTRACTIONS new single is now out on Factory Records.
